One Girl's Journey to Saturday Night Live

My name is Lauren Bancroft and I'm from from Nashua, NH.

I started this Tumblr in December of 2010 to document my path to go from who and where I am now, to being a cast member of Saturday Night Live. I have a realistic plan with attainable goals that I work very hard at every week.

I do stand up. I study improv. I write sketches. I work hard.

Ten phases. Eight years. One goal.

BIG NEWS GUYS

Every year, the Nashua Rotary Club hosts a three day music, food and entertainment festival called Ribfest. Over the three days it brings in 25,000-30,000 people. This year they have decided to put on a comedy show the Saturday night of the Friday-Sunday fiesta. They have never tried comedy before, so this is new new new.

AND GUESS WHO GET’S TO HOST IT.

It’s almost weird how lucky I am sometimes. My stepdad is in Rotary Club and they were all talking about who was going to introduce the comedians and he volunteered my services.

The show will seat 250 people and tickets are $40 a pop (that is steep). Goodness I am so excited. My stepdad said they might need more help than just my hosting, so I think I’ll offer to make flyers and advertise. I could do that easy.

I probably won’t get to do much time but getting in good this year really just makes next year a lock too. How am I this lucky guys?

Improv Level Two Class One In Review

Holy crap guys, we are not in Kansas anymore. Although that analogy would work better if Kansas was in fact the pretty fun place with rainbows and not the colorless harsh world of level two improv. Damn.

My new instructor is named Kylie. She started at Improv Asylum 14 years ago, spent about 5 years on the Main Stage and just got back to Boston from studying at Second City in Chicago for three years. And damn does she mean business.

Half way through the class I texted Cade and said improv wasn’t fun anymore. But things got better. I think the three week gap in classes just needed the first hour to shake off. Kirsten (last instructor) had this way of phrasing corrections like suggestions. Kylie seems much more direct. It is just a very different feel.

Another class and instructor to woo!

So far I gather that level two is all about having a point of view. This will be challenging

Edit: She suggested two improv books and I am buying them immediately. She knows stuff.

I think I want this to be my head shot. Too much body? Not enough head? (Is there ever enough head?)

Holy SNL cast member changes Batman!

I am very interested to see what this will mean for new cast members to come into the picture next season.

Do you think there are a handful of Second City or UCB main stage performers who feel like it’s Christmas morning? I know that only Seth and Bill confirmed that they’re leaving but I’ve heard/read rumors in the past year about Fred, Jason and Keenan leaving after this season too.  Quite a lot of change all at once.

Keep me posted Tumblr.

Being on the other end of Mother’s Day is like being in a club. But instead of cool jackets you get a new pet you have a legal obligation to keep alive.

I’m more relieved than the girls on Maury when he says, “(Guy’s name), you are the father.”

Today is the two year anniversary of my very first open mic.

I wish I could say how lucky I’ve been to have family, friends and colleagues who have supported me to the extent that they have. Comedy is a lifestyle and committing to it has forced me to see a few people leave my life but thanks to comedy I have also met so many wonderful people I never would have met otherwise.

This has been such an amazing ride and I can’t wait for the road to get rockier and the rewards to become greater.

Dreaming big leads to thinking big which leads to doing big things.

Thanks for dreaming big with me guys.

Keep working smart and developing your skill set. A lot of folks really believe in you.
